Summary
[edit]DescriptionMay Road Well - geograph.org.uk - 767569.jpg |
English: May Road Well An apparently insignificant spring issues from under this large stone which is faintly inscribed "Mary's Holy Well", though marked on the OS map as May Road Well. In his 'The Ancient Crosses of Lancashire' 1902 Henry Taylor says that the well has been variously known as 'Mare Hole Well', 'Mare Hole Well Fair', 'Mary Hoyles Well' and 'Mary Hoyle Well'. According to a letter to the Accrington Observer about the same date, pilgrimages used to be made here on the first Sunday in May as the water was supposed to possess virtues of some kind and that these pilgrims later evolved into revellers and holidaymakers which led to the meetings being known as fairs. |
