Description
English: This oil sheen on the water surface (Sugar River, New Hampshire) was nearby to a Manufactured Gas Plant (former Synergy site) in Claremont, New Hampshire. Divers helped to sample the bottom sediment and water quality to help determine whether or not additional cleanup actions are warranted. Environmental Response Team (ERT) divers were supporting the Superfund cleanup program by installing miniature wells to characterize shallow discharging groundwater. The underwater view, although murky, is extremely helpful when EPA is trying to determine the extent of the contamination and possible cleanup impacts for this and other bodies of water throughout the U.S.
