A mausoleum structure marking a burial site in Takwa, Lamu

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The mausoleum is a structure that is borrowed from Lamu's past interactions with peoples of other cultures during the Indian Ocean trade. Commonly adopted for Portuguese and British funeral sites, the mausoleum is only assigned for influential figures of the religion in Lamu. The above is the mausoleum of one of the last Islamic scholars known to have hailed from the famous Takwa ruins and was buried in the late 18th Century by followers of his school of thought. Today the graveyard marks an important turning point for the ancestors of Takwa, as it was a seal of the heritage, tradition and normative value that was exalted by Takwa's people before they abandoned the island and moved to the neighbouring Lamu Island.
