English: The Maulidi celebrations of Lamu town are unique since they cover large participation by the Muslim community. There are different interpretations of the word Maulidi. Maulidi comes from the Arab word Mawled which is a certain kind of poem meant to be recited by a group of people in honor of the Prophet Mohammed. The Kiswahili word Maulidi is derived from the Arabic word Malid. Different kinds of Maulidi are recited through out the Muslim world such as Maulidi ya Rama,Maulidi Habshy, Maulidi Barazanj, and Maulidi Sharaful'anam to celebrate the Prophet's birthday.
The arrival of Habib Swaleh in Lamu incorporate tambourine as a musical instrument to play Maulidi, since musical instruments had never before been used in the Maulidi at Lamu.
