Description
Italiano: Mattia Preti, Sofonisba riceve la coppa con il veleno
"Versione autografa del maestro calabrese. Altra versione è conservata alla galleria Pallavicini (già collezione Principessa Maria Camilla Pamphilj), ed entrambe sono databili alla fine del attività romana di Mattia Preti (Zeri 1959, p. 319; Spike 1999, p. 258 n. 192). Queste due opere, insieme alla tela datata nel 1949, si ipotizzano provenire dalla illustre collezione del Principe Ruffo di Messina. La tela è databile tra gli anni 1653 ed il 1660, prima del definitivo trasferimento del maestro in quel di Malta. Paragoni stilistici dell'opera possono esse elevati con i dipinti realizzati nello stesso periodo come 'La vendetta di Procne', dei Musei Civici di Parma e 'Il ritorno del figliol prodigo', nella versione del Musèe de Tessè a Le Mans. Cornice in legno laccato a finto marmo nero, con bordo a foglie tortili in oro, dell'inizio del XX secolo"
