English: Matthew Boulton College Birmingham Matthew Boulton College began life as Birmingham's first purpose-built Municipal Technical School, the Foundation Stone for which was laid in Suffolk Street on the 18th November 1893. The Suffolk Street site was re-named Matthew Boulton Technical College, designated by the Education Committee in November 1957. The new name was chosen to honour Matthew Boulton. He built his reputation on jewellery, silverware and plated goods of the highest quality. His Birmingham Soho Manufactory, established in 1761, soon becoming the World's largest and most famous manufacturing business. When his silver works was only six years old, he met a young James Watt. In 1786, Boulton applied steam power to his coining presses in the Soho works, and created the birth of modern, high quality, fraud resistant coinage. http://www.matthew-boulton.ac.uk/index.asp?SID=99 |
