Hoch in den Lüften stürzt Bellerophon von seinem Flügelpferd Pegasus. Zuschauer im Vordergrund sehen dem Todessturz zu. Rechts fließt der Neckar, bei der Neckarbrücke ist Cannstatt mit der Stadtkirche zu sehen. Im Mittelgrund links auf einer Anhöhe die alte Berger Kirche.

Der Sinnspruch „Ne nimis alta pete“ („Wer hoch steigt, fällt tief“) wird illustriert durch Bellerophon, der von seinem Flügelpferd heruntergefallen ist und zur Erde stürzt. Das Sinngedicht lautet: „Steig nicht zu hoch, Bellerophon, Gen Himml reitt, zur Erd felt mit Hohn“.
