Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Matt Urban Hope Center, 1081 Broadway at Playter Street, Buffalo, New York, May 2020. Built in 1905, the building is a good example of architect Władysław Zawadzki's trademark Renaissance-influenced style; salient architectural features on this five-bay, four-story beauty include a decorative pediment crowning the entrance that's flanked by an entablature with a dentil course below, window treatments that vary by floor according to the style and include decorative brick tabs on the side, and third-floor windows with round arches above and still more decorative brickwork surrounding, and a French roof. Originally home of the Dom Polski, a community center and gathering place for the large Polish-American population of the neighborhood, the building was home over the years to the headquarters of dozens of neighborhood societies and groups such as the Polish Mutual Aid Society, the Polish Businessmen's Association, the Polish Savings & Loan, and several Polish singing societies, while the ground floor was rented out as retail and restaurant space and the community hall played host to wedding receptions, dances, political events, and other gatherings. Later in the 1970s it served as the city-owned Polish Community Center; now it's the Lt. Col. Matt Urban Human Services Center aka Matt Urban Hope Center, serving a variety of community functions.
