English: Igreja Matriz do Santíssimo Sacramento de Santo Antônio is one of the most beautiful temples in Recife. It has a colonial baroque style, its construction began in 1753 and completed in 1790, and was dedicated to Saint Anthony. The church is located around Praça da Independência, in the Santo Antônio neighborhood.
In the place where the temple was built, there used to be the trenches of the Dutch invaders and the well-known Powder House. Then, in 1752, the Irmandade do Santíssimo Sacramento da Matriz do Corpo decided to acquire the land and build a church measuring 100 palms in length by 50 in width.
