DescriptionMateparae and Huebner at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.jpg |
English: Sir Jerry Mateparae, Governor-General of New Zealand, and David Huebner, U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand, pay their respects at the foot of the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at the National War Memorial here, June 14. Two squads of U.S. Marines from the 11th Marine Regiment stood guard at the foot of the ceremony during the arrival of the official guests, including New Zealand Prime Minister John Key. Government and military officials of the United States and New Zealand commemorated the 70th anniversary of the arrival of U.S. forces in Wellington during World War II. Australian and New Zealand forces were conducting heavy fighting in North Africa in 1942 while U.S. forces played a significant role in the defense of Oceania. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt.
