Title / Titre : Mate A. F. Pickard and Chief Engine Room Artificer W. Spence, St. John's, Newfoundland, 1942. Both men played key roles in the corvette HMCS Chambly's sinking of the German submarine U-501 on September 10, 1941, the Royal Canadian Navy's first confirmed submarine sinking of the Second World War. Pickard was mentioned in despatches and Spence received a Distinguished Service Medal / Le lieutenant A. F. Pickard et le chef des machines W. Spence, St. John’s (Terre Neuve), en 1942. Les deux hommes jouent un rôle clé lorsque la corvette NCSM Chambly coule le sous marin allemand U 501 le 10 septembre 1941. C’est la première victoire confirmée de la Marine royale canadienne contre un sous marin durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. À titre de récompense, Pickard est cité à l’ordre du jour et Spence reçoit une médaille du service distingué.
