Ce masque a été donné par le critique d'art Félix Fénéon à son ami le peintre Émile Compard (1900-1977)

Oeuvre présentée dans l'exposition "Félix Fénéon (1861-1944). Cette exposition, très érudite, est le premier volet d'un hommage à Félix Fénéon (1861-1944), critique d'art visionnaire, éditeur, marchand d'art, ami de Seurat et de Signac, qui a été l'un des premiers collectionneurs d'art extra-occidental, notamment "d'art nègre" comme on l'appelait à l'époque ou plus généralement d'arts lointains.

Elle sera suivie d'une exposition complémentaire au musée de l'Orangerie dès le 16/10/2019 intitulée "Félix Fénéon. Les temps nouveaux, de Seurat à Matisse", puis d'une exposition regroupant les deux volets au MoMA à New-York.
