an people have beendubbed a nation of physic devotees. It is indeed unfortunate that cathartics andlaxatives have been thus employed with solittle rhyme or reason. The harm that hasbeen done is only too apparent in the countlesssufferers who never have a natural bowelevacuation. Happily a good many physicians are awaken-ing to the desirability of directing their treat-1ment of bowel inertia and torpidity towardrational stimulation of the physiologic func-tions of the intestinal tract. The results ob-tained point so conclusively to the wisdom ofthis line of treatment that the older measureswhich depend for their effects on irritation ofthe intestinal mucosa or nervous mechanism ofthe bowel, or both, are rapidly becoming obso-lete. Among tin remedies that act by correctinginsufficiency of the physiologic processes of thebowels, Prunoids undoubtedly enjoy greatestpopularity.
