DR. Garretts case of progressive muscular atrophy. 440 MARYLAND MEDICAL JOURNAL OCT., 1902 The opththalmoscope shows no change in the optic nerve. Thepupils are three milhmeters, equal, regular, and reactive to Ught andaccommodation. There are no bulbar symptoms. It has neverbeen possible to demonstrate any fibrillary tremor, but at intervalschoreiform movements of the upper and lower extremities havebeen observed. The mental symptoms are most likely only a part of the generaldisease, being probably due to extension of the spinal lesion to thebrain, and should possibly be classified under the head of the or-ganic dementias. She has become feeble-minded, and is forgetful and incapable ofattending to her household duties. Her vocabulary has been re-duced to a few words. She has no idea of time, mental impressionsare greatly retarded, and there is an inability to concentrate theattention. She is lacking in will power, and can no longer dependon herself for the performance of the simplest
