INFANTILE DIAR^tHEA—Kxox and Bassett. 253 fall months is due to the deaths of chronic cases. Note the absenceof any characteristic relation to temperature in the mortality ofinfants from causes other than diarrheal. Number of Species.—Thirty of the samples collected depositeda sediment on standing, and from this sediment bacillus coli couldbe easily cultivated. Observations on the number and characterof species were made by study of the plate cultures and by sub-cultures in the standard media. The better class of milk containsthe normal flora of acid fermentation, showing three or four specieswhich could be easily differentiated. Those milks which the chem-ical examination showed to be diluted contained a more variedflora, six to ten species being readily determined. The finding ofnumerous colonies of bacillus violaceus, an organism whose nor-mal habitat is surface water, in a number of samples of milk isworthy of note.
