It is madeof a fine quality of earthenware, thussecuring strength and durability; atthe same time it is light, compact, orna-mental ; aud last, but not least, it can MARYLAND MEDICAL JOURNAL 411 be furnished at at a price that willenable every one practising surgeryto provide himself with one or more. The accompanying cut represents thedifferent parts as follows : The box is round, four inches indiameter and two inches high, with anoutside cover, No. 3, that is held inposition by a neat clamp, No. 1, which,when adjusted, is prevented from slip-ping by a slot on either side of the bandor flange at the top of the box, the screwholding the cover tightly down uponthe rubber washer, No. 3, which en-circles the top, and renders the box ab-solutely air and fluid tight, so that theligatures can be carried constantly inany solution desired without any dangerof leakage. The inner cover, No. 4, is a flat diskwith a slot cut in the edge to allow it tobe placed in position, and held by twosmall catches placed on opposite sidesof the box; the small knob in thecentre serves to turn and place and re-move the cover. There are four holesperforating this cover for the four sizesof silk generally used, and half an inchfrom the ed^e of these is a raised band,also, perforated, for the silk to pass, thus
