Lieutenant Ebenezer Mattoon, in his worn continentaluniform, bringing home the historic cannon as a relic forthe town, received a hearty welcome from his neighborsand friends. To the boys crowding about he told howhis squad was encamped on one side of a small stream,and his men watched the British on the other side cook-ing their evening meal in a kettle over the camp fire. Agun was fired at the kettle, sending its contents flying inevery direction, thus giving the redcoats a surprise.Again, near Saratoga, he found himself with a small partygreatly outnumbered by the enemy. Instead of surren-dering at their command, he ordered his only gun firedthirteen times in succession, and thus cut his way throughto safety. Many stories like these he delighted to tell inafter years, and persons are living to-day who rememberhow his eyes would twinkle, and how he would shakewith laughter, as he described his youthful antics. ^ oI ^ .a

Her Hero of the Revolution 41 About the time of his discharge, some artist painted aminiature of the young lieutenant in uniform. Thepicture is owned to-day by his great-granddaughter, Mrs.Edith Wolcott Davis. It came to her through her motlier,Mrs. Wolcott, who had received it from her mother, MaryMattoon Dwight, the daughter of the General, who livedwith him for many years in East Amherst. The copy ofthe picture shows us the young soldier as he appearedabout 1779, at the most interesting time, when, as hesays, he left the army, returned to Amherst, and wasmarried to Mary Dickinson. VI. THE Rev. David Parsons had become so bitter aTory that we are not surprised to find no recordof the marriage in his handwriting. The ardentyoung patriot would hardly go to him for such a service.The ceremony may have been performed by a magistrateas was customary.
