n, being so well off in this worlds goods andhaving another boy Eleazer to keep him company, mayhave decided to educate his eldest son. We leave thelatter to pursue his preparatory studies, and turn ourattention to the little East Street girl and her training inher childhoods home. Noah Dickinson was a thrifty farmer and owned muchfertile land in the part o\ the town least settled at thattime. There was no church or common. Main street, laid out around a swamp where the First Congregationalchurch now stands, could show but one dwelling betweenEast Amherst and the center. The Dickinson housewas on the South Amherst road, and here it is sup-posed Mary was born. The family afterward lived inthe house on Main street still standing next to theAdams house. Close by were the tavern kept byOliver Clapp, and Aaron Warners house and blacksmithshop. The roads to North Amherst and to Pelham ledthrough thick woods. From these sometimes a deercame out, and off on Pelham hills wolves howled at night-

The children in those East Street homes did notneed a curfew to call them in at an early hour, for therewas no temptation to linger on the dreary unlightedstreets. When Mary Dickinson was twelve years old herfather was more prosperous than many of his neighbors. In 1770 he owned 2 horses, 3 cows, 2 pigs and 3 oxen, personal estate worth ^15, 6s., and real estate worth£^2, 15s., the total being ;^58, is., for which he wastaxed. From this we learn that although not luxurious, the home in which our little girl lived until her marriagewas one of comfort. Her mother was a thrifty housewife, well versed in all old fashioned arts and crafts. Shewas her daughters only teacher in all things practicaland ornamental. We imagine that the school days of the little girl wereearly ended, for from incidents in after life we know thatNoah Dickinson did not care much for education,
