Whata happy day it was when, forty-six years ago, I was united to oneof the best of men! What a happy meet-ing it will be—never more to be separated! His army life and histraveling life and my life in the missionary army often separatedus. In glory we shall go out no more forever. Glory to his name!The papers announce the very sudden departure of the Treasurer ofour General Missionary Society, Dr. Hunt. As he was crossingthe threshold of the hotel in Cincinnati, he crossed the thresholdof time into eternity. Ah, we know not how near the brink we are!Oh, to be ready when the summons comes! CHAPTER XXII HOMEWARD BOUND March 26. This letter is commenced while passing throughthe Red Sea. We thank God there are no hosts after us, no Pha-raoh, with six hundred chariots of iron to take us back to bondageand to death, but we are calmly passing through the sea, thoughsuffering with the heat and longing for the days when we shallstrike a northerly latitude. Till then, we must remain day andnight wet with perspiration and exhausted for want of ozone in theair. Our steamer is very crowded. Most of the peop.le are Frenchwith their volatile pleasures and fashions, their wine drinking, cardplaying and smoking habits, but we are a Christian party of twelve,sitting together at the same table and enjoying very much eachothers society and fellowship. Thus far we have had no roughseas, no stormy winds, for which we are very grateful. We stoppedten hours at Aden, but did not go ashore because it was too hot tomake the effort.
