English: Plate XLIII of ribs, pelvis and scapula of Megalosaurus drawn by Mary Morland, from William Buckland's "Notice on the Megalosaurus or great Fossil Lizard of Stonesfield". Transactions of the Geological Society of London, series 2, vol 1: 390 -396. A monumental year in paleontology seeing (in this volume) both Buckland's first scientific description of a dinosaur, Megalosaurus, and Conybeare's first validation of long necked Plesiosaurs and scientific reconstructions of Plesiosaurs and Ichthyosaurs. Mary Moreland who drew these plates would later become Rev. Buckland's wife. These were some of the very few bones from which Richard Owen would base his reconstruction of Megalosaurus for Waterhouse Hawkins' Crystal Palace reconstructions in 1854.- artist Mary Buckland, née Morland (1797-1857), British palaeontologist |
