English: Arms of Marwood (anciently de Marwood) of Westcot in the parish of Marwood, Devon: Gules, a chevron between three goat's heads erased ermine attired or (Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.560). Westcot is located in the parish of Marwood, per Pole, Sir William (d.1635), Collections Towards a Description of the County of Devon, Sir John-William de la Pole (ed.), London, 1791, p.398.
These arms are visible as the 5th of 20 quarters on the mural monument in Bishop's Tawton Church, Devon, of Sir John III Chichester (1598-1669) of Hall, in the parish of Bishop's Tawton, Devon. John Chichester (1542-1596) of Hall (grandfather of Sir John III Chichester (1598-1669)), married Elizabeth Marwood (d.1614/15), the eldest of the daughters and co-heiresses of John Marwood of Westcot. (Vivian, p.560; p.176, pedigree of Chichester) Also on the sign of the "Notley Arms" public house in the village of Monksilver, Somerset, showing the arms of Notley of Combe Sydenham, Somerset, quartering Marwood. |
