Il dipinto è stato acquisito nel 2020 dalla Fondazione De Chiara De Maio di Solofra (AV), rientrando in Italia dopo oltre tre secoli di residenza in Spagna.

L’opera è stata in possesso del principe Sebastián Gabriel di Borbone (1811-1875), che l’ha acquistata durante la sua permanenza a Napoli e l’ha poi tradotta a Madrid. La già ingente collezione dell’Infante di Spagna, si arricchì ulteriormente con le opere portate in dote dalla prima e dalla seconda moglie, Maria Amalia di Napoli e Maria Cristina di Borbone. Tra gli autori rappresentati nel suo patrimonio: Goya, Greco, Alonso Cano, Ribera, Velázquez, Murillo, Rosso Fiorentino.

L'opera "apprezzabile per il suo vigore denotativo, rimanda idealmente all'ultimo dipinto di Caravaggio, con omonimo soggetto, conservato a Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano di Napoli".

The painting was acquired in 2020 by the Fondazione De Chiara De Maio of Solofra (AV), returning to Italy after more than three centuries of residence in Spain.

The work was in the possession of Prince Sebastián Gabriel of Bourbon (1811-1875), who purchased it during his stay in Naples and then brought it to Madrid. The already large collection of the Infant of Spain, was further enriched with the works brought in dowry by the first and second wife, Maria Amalia of Naples and Maria Cristina of Bourbon. Among the authors represented in its heritage: Goya, Greco, Alonso Cano, Ribera, Velázquez, Murillo, Rosso Fiorentino.

The work "appreciable for its denotative vigour, ideally refers to the last painting by Caravaggio, with the same subject, kept at Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano in Naples".
