Summary
[edit]DescriptionMartino-Martini-Regni-Sinensis-a-Tartari-devastati-enarratio.png |
English: A European artist's impression of a Manchu warrior devastating China, depicted on the cover of Martino Martini's book. Modern historians (e.g. P.K. Crossley in The Manchu, or D.E. Mungello) note the discrepancy between the picture and the content of the book; e.g., the severed head held by the warrior has a queue, which is a Manchu hairstyle (also imposed by Manchu on the population of conquered China), and is not likely to be had by a Ming loyalist. |
Date | |
Source | The cover page of "Regni Sinensis a Tartari devastati enarratio" by Martino Martini. Reproduced in numerous modern books, and at https://books.google.com.au/books?id=lPNaAAAAQAAJ |
Author | Anonymous Dutch engraver. (Probably not Martini himself, since the picture does not match his description of Manchus; see e.g. discussion in "The Manchus" by P.K. Crossley) |
