Text Appearing Before Image:
mands, regardless of the gates ofhell, to say nothing of the unlearned, popes, cardinals, and bishops. ... It has become so clear that indulgencesare mere knavery and deception, and Christ aloneought to be preached to the people, that your ElectoralGrace cannot excuse yourself on the ground of ignorance.Let me remind your Electoral Grace of the beginning. What a terrible fire was kindled by a little despisedspark, when all the world felt so secure, and thought asingle poor beggar was far too small for the pope, andwas undertaking an impossible thing. Therefore your Electoral Grace is herebyfinally informed, if the idol is not done away with,I shall be unavoidably compelled, for the sake of divine
Text Appearing After Image:
AT THE WARTBURG 221 doctrine and Christian salvation, to attack your ElectoralGrace openly as well as the pope, to denounce the under-taking merrily, to lay at the door of the Bishop ofMayence all the old enormities of Tetzel, and to show thewhole world the difference between a bishop and a wolf.... I have no pleasure in your Electoral Graces shameand humiliation, but if a stop is not put to the profaningand desecrating of Gods truth, I and all Christians are induty bound to maintain His honor, although the wholeworld, to say nothing of a poor man, a cardinal, be there-by disgraced. I shall not keep still, and even if I do notsucceed, I hope you bishops will no longer sing your littlesong with joy. You have not yet got rid of all thosewhom Christ has awakened against your idolatroustyranny. Within a fortnight I shall expect your ElectoralGraces favorable reply, for at the expiration of thattime my little book Against the Idol at Halle will beissued if a public answer be not received.
