Description

O nome de Martim Moniz está ligado à conquista de Lisboa aos Mouros e figura na memória da cidade através de uma praça com o seu nome. A lenda conta que D. Afonso Henriques tinha posto cerco à cidade, ajudado pelos muitos cruzados que por aqui passaram a caminho da Terra Santa. O cerco durou ainda algum tempo, durante o qual se travavam pequenas investidas por parte dos cristãos. Numa dessas tentativas de assalto a uma das portas da cidade, Martim Moniz enfrentou os mouros que saíam para repelir os cristãos e conseguiu manter a porta aberta mesmo a custo da sua própria vida. O seu corpo ficou atravessado entre os dois batentes e permitiu que os cristãos liderados por D. Afonso Henriques entrassem na cidade. Ferido gravemente, Martim Moniz entrou com os seus companheiros e fez ainda algumas vítimas entre os seus inimigos, antes de cair morto. D. Afonso Henriques quis honrar a sua valentia e o sacrifício da sua vida ordenando que aquela entrada passasse a ter o nome de Martim Moniz. O povo diz que foi D.
