English: Victims of Martial law Memorial Wall, Manila by Mayor Jose L. Atienza, Jr. , September 21, 2006 inaugurated by Sen. Nene Pimentel at the inauguration on September 21, 2006 at the Mehan Gardens, Manila [1] - 39th anniversary of Martial Law[2] Memorial Wall for ML Victims Unveiled[3]Victims of Martial Law Memorial Wall is a project of the City of Manila under the leadership of Mayor Jose L. Atienza, Jr.[4] Mayor Atienza also presided over the formal renaming of Hospital St. between the Bonifacio Shrine and Universidad de Manila campus to Justice Cecilia Munoz-Palma St.[5] The Memorial Wall is 4 large blocks of black marble, where the names of martial law victims are etched. A plaque explaining the memorial is on one end. ---- Martial law in the Philippines[6] Martial law in the Philippines (Tagalog: Batas Militar sa Pilipinas) refers to the period of Philippine history wherein Philippine Presidents and Heads of state declared a proclamation to control troublesome areas under the rule of the Military, and it is usually given when threatened by popular demonstrations, or to crack down on the opposition. Martial law can also be declared in cases of major natural disasters, however most countries use a different legal construct like "state of emergency".
