Juni 1975, Lot 128; Privatsammlung, Wien Marten Ryckaerts Landschaftsgemälde stehen in der Tradition der Brueghels und Valckenborchs. Er gilt als einer der letzten Exponenten dieser Richtung der Landschaftsmalerei. Im Gegensatz zu den früheren Beispielen dieser Bildgattung ist sein Werk von größerem Naturalismus und genauerer Landschaftsbeobachtung geprägt. Im Katalog Von Bruegel bis Rubens, Das goldene Jahrhundert der flämischen Malerei (Köln 1992, S. 299) heißt es über den Künstler: “Nur wenig ist heute über Leben und Werk des Marten Ryckaert bekannt. Er stammt aus jener Antwerpener Künstlerfamilie, als deren bedeutendster Vertreter der Neffe des Malers, David Ryckaert III, zu nennen ist. Marten Ryckaert wurde 1587 in der Scheldestadt geboren. 1611/12 trat er als Meister in die St. Lukasgilde ein. Auch in der Rhetorikervereinigung ‘De Violieren’ ist er als Mitglied nachgewiesen. In Italien lernte er Paul Bril kennen, dessen Werk ihn maßgeblich beeinflusste. Der Künstler starb 1631 in Antwerpen [...]. Die frühen Arbeiten des Malers sind im Schema der Überschaulandschaft mit hohem Horizont und Betrachterstandpunkt angelegt. Den Tendenzen der Zeit entsprechend, entwickelte auch Ryckaert zunehmend wirklichkeitsgetreue Landschaften, die mit einer genrehaften Figurenstaffage versehen sind...”. Von seinem Lehrer Tobias Verhaecht übernahm Ryckaert die Vorliebe für phantastische Felsformationen mit Wasserfällen; wie Verhaecht bevorzugte Ryckaert ein kühles, fahles Grün. Ein dem hier vorliegenden Werk vergleichbares Gemälde, Berglandschaft mit Satyrn, befindet sich in der National Gallery, London (Inv. Nr. 1353). |
