Summary

[edit]
Description

Castellane | Place Castellane La Place Castellane is a square named after Henri-César de Castellane-Majastre who offered the land and financed the work in 1774. That square had at its center an obelisk from 1811 to the early 20th-Century. It was on the occasion of the birth of the son of the Emperor Napoleon I, the King of Rome.

Since November 12, 1911, this obelisk was transferred to the Mazargues neighborhood and replaced by the fountain "Jules Cantini," one of the most beautiful fountains in the city: Marseille is at the top of a column; its faces evokes the Mediterranean pointing at the harbor, and the Rhone is allegorically represented at all stages of its journey from its source to the sea. It was sculpted between 1911 and 1913 by André-Joseph Allar in Carrara marble at the request of Jules Cantini.
