[edit]DescriptionMarseille - MuCEM Fort Saint-Jean (16387201756).jpg |
Hôtel de Ville | Promenade Louis Brauquier The Hospitallers of Jerusalem first occupied the old Chapel of St. Jean-Baptiste, and then undertook the construction of a new church, a hospital and the Palace of the Commander. The set was completed in 1365. Between 1447-53, King René built the Tour Carrée which bears his name: "Tour du roi René". In the middle of the 17th, the Marseille shipowners planned the construction of the "Tour du Fanal" or Tour Ronde, a lookout tower high enough to be visible for commercial vessels more than 20km from the harbor of Marseille. It remained a fort until the French Revolution, then it became a prison and is now an important part of the MuCEM. Here, the footbridge built by Rudy Ricciotti connecting the fort to the Esplanade de la Tourette, with the Eglise Saint-Laurent and La Tourette buildings in the background. |
