Burgess Shale
Marrella splendens
UF-IP 12941
From Canada, British Columbia
Lived ~500 million years ago
This "Lace Crab" is the most common animal found in the Burgess Shale. Scientists once thought that it was related to trilobites. Surprisingly, it's neither a crab nor a trilobite, it's an arthropod that lived and fed in mud of the ancient seafloor. Extremely well-preserved specimens helped scientists discover that these arthropods had an iridescent sheen and were very colorful.
