Argnats Cross. Church Square, Marols, Loire.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Argnat Cross. Church Square, Marols, Loire. « The Argnats crosses are mostly decorated with billets, one on each oblique pan at the four ends of the cross, and ten on the cylindrical pedestal, when it is preserved : they are the « argnats », « boils » in patois. It is supposed that they represent buboes of plague and that these crosses were supposed to protect against contagious diseases. An oral tradition tells us that a piece was placed on an argnat of the pedestal to be cured, and that if someone came to steal it he also took the wrong. »
