Muchopportunity exists to broaden market outlets and to develop theconsuming capacity of the markets now in use. Table 7 liststhe total quantities of Imperial Valley melons consumed by thevarious markets in the United States in 1914 and 1915. A study ofthis table shows that some 20 new markets that had never beforereceived carloads received direct shipments of muskmelons in the 20 BULLETIN 401, U. S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE. past season, some of them receiving several cars. That consumption does not dependentirely upon the size of the city is demonstrated by the fact that in1915 Pittsburgh consumed 184 more cars of melons at as good averageprices as Philadelphia, a city more than twice its size. A possiblereason for this is the fact that for many years several of the mostimportant muskmelon distributors in the United States have hadtheir headquarters in Pittsburgh, and melons have been pushedvigorously on the market.
