| Description |
English: The location of Knoxville’s main city market house from 1853 until 1960, this pedestrian plaza was created in the early 1980s as part of a downtown renewal project that was coordinated with the 1982 World’s Fair, held in the Second Creek Gulch nearby. The site is a major gathering space for the residents of Knoxville, and features trees inside fenced planting beds, a large covered pavilion at the north end of the square which functions as a stage for live music performances, a grove of trees at the south end of the square that soften the space’s transition to Market Street, with the square being one of the best proportioned outdoor plaza spaces in the United States. The square itself a contributing resource in the Market Square Commercial Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. |
