Description
English: Market Place, Reading, looking south-eastwards to High Street, c. 1890. On the east side, Nos. 20 and 21 (Market Place Chambers, with signs for Butler and Company, auctioneers, valuers and surveyors, and for Arthur Ayres, auctioneer and estate agent); Nos. 19 and 18 (Elephant Hotel); No. 17 (Frank Cooksey, estate agent); Nos. 16, 15, 14 and 13 (London and County Bank); Nos. 12 and 11 (Morris and Davis, tailors); Nos. 10, 9 and 8 (Sutton and Sons, Royal Seed Establishment); No. 7 ("Reading Mercury" office). On the south side, No. 52 (Hill and Company, rubber merchants). A horse-bus waits outside Cooksey's. The Simeon Obelisk, with cabmen's shelter behind it, is visible to the right, and in front of them, two delivery tricycles are parked by the kerb. 1880-1889 : postcard, with caption, "Market Place, 1887" by Berkshire County Library, from a glass negative by H.
