Title
Marine Worms (Aphrodite and Phyllodoce)
Description

This chalk drawing by PH Gosse depicts two carnivorous marine worms found on our shores. The upper illustration is of the “sea mouse” (Aphrodita aculeata), a broad bodied, somewhat slug shaped creature measuring 3 or 4 inches in length. Its body is covered with a dense hairy felt, iridescent bristles and large overlapping scales. One of the bristles in its sheath is shown more highly magnified on the left. The long green worm is a roving predatory organism called Phyllodoce. The drawing on the left shows its mouthparts more highly magnified.

Enlarged drawing of two carnivourous Marine Worms found on our shores. The upper figure represents the “sea mouse” (aphrodite), a broad bodied, somewhat slug shaped creature measuring 3 or 4 inches in length. It is ornamented with iridescent bristles, and the back is furnished with a double row of large overlapping scales, concealed by a close felt of hairs. One of the bristles in its sheath is shown more highly magnified on the left. The long green worm is a roving predatory form called Phyllodoce. There are flattened and leaf like projections on either side of the body segments. During the day these animals lie quietly in their hiding places but come forth at twilight to swim about in search of prey. The drawing on the left shows the mouth of the worm more highly magnified.
