English: Lance Cpl. Carl G. Payne, a combat photographer with 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 2, was excited to finally be able to participate on a mission after working in Musa Qa'lah District Center for about a month. Payne was on his way to Salam Bazaar to photograph damage in that area."About 30 minutes away from the bazaar, we hit an IED (improvised explosive device) and it blew up the [vehicle] I was in," said Payne.Payne, originally from Charlestown, Ind., took shrapnel to the right arm and received a concussion. "I flew out of my seat, hit the top of the cab and came back down." Payne goes on, "The corpsman jumped in and put my arm in a sling; he thought it was broken."After being medically evacuated to Camp Bastion for a proper X-ray, Payne was put with the wounded warriors while he recovers. Payne's brother, Cpl. Hiram Polito, who is also currently in Afghanistan, came to visit him for a couple days."It was great to see him," said Payne. "We went to boot camp together." As he recovers, Payne is looking forward to getting back in the fight and continuing to document what the Marines of 1st Bn, 2nd Marines are doing. |
