Description iconographique:

Dans un intérieur italien traité avec une grande économie de moyens, le modèle qu'une inscription en haut à gauche du tableau désigne sous le nom de Marietta est représenté nu, allongé, le regard en direction du peintre. La torsion de son corps rappelle les odalisques d'Ingres. Commentaire historique:

Corot élargit sa vocation initiale de peintre de paysage à partir des années 1860 où la femme devient l'un des thèmes centraux de ses oeuvres. Pour ce tableau, Marietta pose dans l’atelier d’Achille Benouville où Corot s’installe lors de son troisième et dernier séjour à Rome en 1843. Dans le catalogue de la vente posthume de l'atelier de Corot en 1875, le tableau est titré "Odalisque". Thèmes / Sujets / Lieux représentés : Portrait, Nu féminin, Femme
