| Description |
English: This pillar commemorates the Old Mariaon Cantonment garrisoned in 1857 by the 13th, 48th and 71st Native Infantry. A large portion of these regiments mutinied 0n the evening of 30 May 1857. This pillar marks the site of the resident’s Bungalow occupied by Sir Henry Lawrence KCB, on that memorable occasion and subsequently by rebels.
This mutiny of 30 May was crushed by the small Forces of British and loyal Indian troops and the rebels were routed, but the Mariaon Cantonment was abandoned On 29 June 1857 when Sir Henry Lawrence’s force concentrated on the Lucknow Residency and Machhi Bhawan. |
