Description

Two photos displayed side-by-side in my media room, showing how I was enjoying my favorite recording artists fifteen years apart.

Left: Mariah Carey sings as Boyz II Men look on. This was on 10 October 1995 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, where I had been based at the time. This was my first-ever concert experience. The concert was videotaped for a Thanksgiving television special broadcast on Fox the same year. Until late 2010, Mariah Carey was the recording artist I enjoyed in person the most frequently.

As one of the few idols of my earlier years, Mariah Carey holds a special place in my heart. And with the passing of my other early idols - Michael Jackson in 2009, Whitney Houston in 2012 - Mariah Carey is also the last early idol of mine who is still alive.

I enjoyed Mariah Carey in person on the following dates: 21 November 1994 (meet-and-greet, my first-ever meeting with a music celebrity) 10 October 1995 (pictured here) 21 March 2000 30 September 2006 12 September 2009 21 February 2010

Right: On 5 October 2010, five days short of the 15th anniversary of the left photo, I enjoyed a very different performance, featuring Anna Nalick, in Hollywood. In those fifteen years, I changed coasts, and traded in enjoyment of big-name superstars for a more intimate experience involving a singer-songwriter whom I follow and keep touch with via social media. It is a lot nicer when I have a peek at the artist's creative processes, and when the artist actually recognizes me by name. By November 2010, Anna Nalick would replace Mariah Carey as the artist I enjoy in person the most frequently.

I enjoyed Anna Nalick in person on the following dates: 9 August 2006 (my second-ever meeting with a music celebrity) 21 September 2010 28 September 2010 5 October 2010 (pictured here) 5 November 2010 12 January 2011 19 January 2011 25 January 2011 2 February 2011 9 February 2011 23 February 2011 20 June 2011 6 July 2011 3 August 2011 24 August 2011 31 August 2011 23 October 2011 14 January 2012 28 January 2012 7 June 2012

Geotagging is for Hollywood, the location of the Anna Nalick performance.
