The factual accuracy of this description or the file name is disputed.
Reason: Where is this painting? Is the Museum that says this woman is Mary, Queen of Scots? She is too old to be the Queen of Scots in 1575 and completely different than her iconography (the error – very commonly – was caused by the fact that this is the portrait of a widow, as many portraits of Mary, Queen of Scots portrayed her as a widow). Who knows her iconography knows too that the only – preserved – and last portrait painted during her imprisonment in 1578 is a miniature of Nicholas Hilliard (in two autograph copies, one in the Royal Collection and one in the V&A Museum). From these miniatures derives a copious series of paintings named "Sheffield portraits". If it is the Museum that identifies this one as a portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots, I suggest to rename the file "Portrait of a widow, wrongly identified as Mary, Queen of Scots". If the ascripton of the subject is due to the user who uploaded it, I suggest to rename it simply "Portrait of a widow from English School, about 1575".--Kaho Mitsuki (Dis-moi) 18:02, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
