Maria Malibran (1808-1836), chanteuse, rôle de Desdemona dans l'Otello de Rossini Oeuvre d'Henri Decaisne (1808-1852) 1830 Huile sur toile Paris, musée Carnavalet-Histoire de Paris

Cette célèbre cantatrice, qui a commencé sa carrière en 1828, est morte à vingt-huit ans ; elle est ici représentée pendant la "chanson du saule", au 3ème acte de l'"Otello" de Rossini. Au fond, à gauche, on aperçoit la colonne et le lion de Saint-Marc. Lacomposition du tableau évoque admirablement le drame de l'opéra Otello (décors architecturaux emblématiques de Venise, tenture rouge avec des motifs vénitiens dont la forme épouse celle du modèle, tempête qui approche..) tout en mettant en valeur la beauté, la pureté (robe blanche) et l'art musical de Maria Malibran (petite harpe d'accompagnement du chant).
