Рисунок поступил в Эрмитаж как портрет трех великих княгинь. Тем не менее сходство двух персонажей с обеими императрицами не вызывает сомнений. Ряд обстоятельств позволяет связать рисунок с торжествами, сопутствовавшими коронации императора Александра II, и назвать имя третьего персонажа. Как записала в своем дневнике А.Ф. Тютчева, фрейлина императрицы Марии Александровны, на протяжении нескольких дней (2, 3, 9 сентября 1856 г.) в Кремлевском дворце в Москве устраивались придворные маскарады и балы, на которых присутствовали и высочайшие особы. 3 сентября 1856 г. состоялся народный бал, куда допускались все классы общества и который почтили своим присутствием императрица, великие князья и княжны. Там же была и великая княгиня Александра Иосифовна “в костюме наполовину польском, отороченном мехом, оттенявшем поразительно ее красоту” (Тютчева 2000, с. 262). Таким образом, решается имя третьего персонажа портрета – это великая княгиня Александра Иосифовна, жена великого князя Константина Николаевича.

Возможно, Зичи, по долгу службы зарисовывавший придворные события, сделал ряд предварительных набросков, по которым в 1857 г. сочинил и эту композицию.
