Date
Source The Internet. This picture was published in Miss Maltby's Curricula Vitae intermittently since 1895 and "a detail" was used by Göttingen University in publicizing the Margaret Maltby Mentoring Programm at the University of Gottingen Medical School. The same detail is used in Miss Malby's biography on line at the CWP Library at UCLA. The full picture was used by M. I. T. in a website "Technology Women" devoted to M.I.T. alumnae. It's been used everywhere without attribution to the original owner of the copy of the picture. It's used in the extensive on-line Zeitschrift memorial of her mentor Walther Hermann Nernst. The picture was not among Miss Maltby's effects when we, her family, inherited them. We, Miss Maltby's family and heirs, think the picture used again and again without attribution since 1895--that over 120 years--should be part of Wikimedia Commons. It seems almost certain to be in the public domain. It's the best picture of her at the peak of her career.

Public domain
The copyright situation of this work is theoretically uncertain, because in the country of origin copyright lasts 70 years after the death of the author, and the date of the author's death is unknown. However, the date of creation of the work was over 120 years ago, and it is thus a reasonable assumption that the copyright has expired (see here for the community discussion). Do not use this template if the date of death of the author is known.

This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1929.
