English: Anorthosite in the Precambrian of New York State, USA.
Anorthosite is a coarsely-crystalline, intrusive igneous rock dominated by plagioclase feldspar. A major occurrence of this uncommon rock is in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. In this area, the rocks have been regionally metamorphosed, but the overall mineralogy is the same. At this site, megacrystic anorthosite is present - plagioclase crystals are often quite sizable. Some labradorescent megacrysts are present on the outcrop face. Some float samples have garnet. Geologic unit: Marcy Anorthosite, late Mesoproterozoic, 1.16 Ga Locality: roadcut along the northern side of Route 3, south of Bartlett Pond, immediately east of the Bartlett Carry Road-Route 3 intersection, between the towns of Saranac Lake & Tupper Lake, central Adirondacks, southern Franklin County, northeastern New York State, USA (44° 14’ 49.95” North latitude, 74° 16’ 59.47” West longitude) See info. at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anorthosite |
