[edit]DescriptionMarch to the Music.jpg |
English: An advertisement in the September 3, 1864, edition of Boise News, Bannock City (Idaho City), Idaho Territory, reads: "March to the Music! Ye hawk-eyes, suckers, pukes, wolverines, and the public generally, are invited to call at the Auction and Commission Store, where you will find the best assortment of fancy and staple groceries, wines, liquors, provisions and miners' tools, on the most reasonable terms, for the dust, which is much needed by the subscriber, at the Hawk-Eye Store, No. 313 Wall Street. H.C. Anderson." In 1862 prospectors Moses Splawn and George Grimes visited the Boise Basin, where Bannock City, later renamed Idaho City, was founded in December, 1862. Grimes died in an attack by Shoshone or Bannock forces, but Splawn and a small party of miners escaped to Walla Walla, Washington Territory. Later in 1862 a party of 50 miners returned to the Boise Basin and founded Bannock City. By 1863 the town was home to a large number of businesses, including a newspaper and the Hawk-Eye Store featured in this advertisement. |
