Description

The annual Hand/Hyde Info Show will be held Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at the Ree Heights Auditorium with supper to begin at 5:30pm and the program at 6:00pm. Speakers will include; Dan McCormick, Regional Habitat Manager, SD GF&P speaking on the GF&P Noxious Weed Update; Paul Johnson, Extension Weed Science Coordinator with SDSU, speaking on Recommended Control of Noxious Weeds. Doug Sieck is our featured guest speaker and will be speaking on “The Big 6 in Soil Health.” Doug is a Selby Area producer who was awarded the Excellence in Range Management Award for SD Area III. He is an active board member of the SD Grassland Coalition and is the Chairman of the newly formed SD Soil Health Coalition. Doug farms 1000 acres of cropland, grazes 1250 acres of native rangeland and 470 seeded pasture and has 250 acres of hayland. He runs 200 cows, 180 yearlings and 12 bulls. Doug has implemented novel grazing practices such as mob grazing and bale grazing. Full season cover crop grazing on cropland has been incorporated to help improve soil health. Some of the management changes implemented include 14 miles of cross fencing, 2 miles of underground and 1 mile of above ground water pipeline, long rest periods, once to twice over land use, rotational grazing – 1-5 day moves year round, ¼ of cropland changed to full season cover crops and grazing more hay ground so buying more hay instead. Calving has been moved from March to May, utilizes smaller framed cattle, lower milk EPD cattle, wean at 10 months, fewer shots and no insecticides. This year’s Info Show looks to be another great one! The free roast beef supper catered by D&K Outpost of Highmore and sponsored by Helena Chemical of Pierre starts the night out right, followed by some great topics, presented by terrific speakers and of course, door prizes! Ladies make sure to sign up for the beautiful Black Hills Silver necklace sponsored by Rexall Drug that will be given away at the end of the program! It’s sure to be a night full of great information and opportunity for idea sharing. We hope to see you there! The Info Show is put together through the joint efforts of the Hand and Hyde County Natural Resources Conservation Service, Conservation Districts and Weed Supervisors.
