Description
English: Epigraphic Museum of Athens EM 8642 IG II2 2051 (Greek text) The institution of ephebeia in Athens and other cities aimed at the military training of the youths. After reaching 18 years, Athenians became members of ephebic groups according to their tribes (phyle) and had several years of military training. During roman times the institution of ephebeia became very popular again. It was abolished after the destruction of teh city by Herulli in 267 AD. The marble shield on the photo preserves the list of epheboi of the year of the archon Sulla in the 144/5-148/9 AD.
