English: Map showing the last known location of Indian Navy DO 240. A Dornier-228 maritime surveillance aircraft of the Indian Navy on a routine night training sortie ditched at sea about 20 nautical miles South West of Goa on the night of 24 March 2015. The Naval Air Station at Goa lost radar contact with the aircraft at 10:08 PM IST on 24 Mar 2015. The aircraft is feared to have ditched soon thereafter. The aircrew onboard the aircraft comprised three officers (two pilots and one female observer).
One survivor, Commander Nikhil Kuldip Joshi, was picked up by a passing fishing boat (Niharika – from a fishing hamlet off Karwar) and transferred to a naval Fast Interceptor Craft. He was taken to naval hospital Patanjali at Karwar and was reported to be stable. Eight Naval ships and four aircraft were immediately deployed to search the area to locate the remaining two officers. The debris of a Dornier maritime surveillance aircraft was found on the morning of 26 March 2015 using under water SONAR system. INS Makar, a naval hydrographic vessel, had detected a large metallic object likely to be the fuselage of the ill fated Navy Dornier. The body of Lt. Kiran Shekhawat, the observer, was recovered from the wreckage later that evening, and taken to INS Hansa, stationed in Goa. The third crew member of the ill-fated plane was still missing as of 27 March 2015.
