Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Map of the degree to which Middle Chinese affricates and velars in palatal environments have merged as a palatal series in local Chinese dialects in the core Chinese-speaking area, reflecting fieldwork conducted between December 2002 and December 2006.
Map legend

Darker shades denote more merging, while the lightest shades denote none (or hardly any).

The corresponding map of the Atlas uses a precise quantification devised for that map:

96–100% separate, 0–4% merged

91–95% separate, 5–9% merged

86–90% separate, 10–14% merged

81–85% separate, 15–19% merged

76–80% separate, 20–24% merged

71–75% separate, 25–29% merged

66–70% separate, 30–34% merged

61–65% separate, 35–39% merged

56–60% separate, 40–44% merged

51–55% separate, 45–49% merged

46–50% separate, 50–54% merged

41–45% separate, 55–59% merged

36–40% separate, 60–64% merged

31–35% separate, 65–69% merged

25–30% separate, 70–75% merged

For example, in the Beijing dialect, 23 of 35 sample characters with affricate initials and 38 of 44 sample characters with velar initials (all in palatal environments) have merged as palatals (j, q and x in pinyin).

From these figures, the merger percentage is calculated as (23*38)/(35*44) = 57%. Subtracting this from 100% yields a separation percentage of 43%.
