Русский: Авраам Ортелиус (1527–1598) был фламандским гравером и бизнесменом, который много путешествовал, преследуя свои коммерческие интересы. В 1560 году в ходе путешествия с Герардусом Меркатором он заинтересовался научной географией. Главный труд Ортелиуса "Theatrum orbis terrarum" ("Театр мира") был опубликован в Антверпене в 1570 году, на заре золотой эпохи голландской картографии. Français : Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) était un graveur et homme d'affaires flamand qui voyagea beaucoup afin de poursuivre ses intérêts commerciaux. En 1560, il s'intéressa à la géographie scientifique au cours d'un voyage avec Gerardus Mercator. L'ouvrage principal d'Ortelius, Theatrum orbis terrarum (Le théâtre du monde), fut publié à Anvers en 1570, à l'aube de l'âge d'or de la cartographie hollandaise. Theatrum présenta le monde dans ses parties composantes et refléta un âge d'exploration, élargit les connexions commerciales, et l'étude scientifique. Considéré ajourd'hui comme le premier atlas du monde, l'original Theatrum fut rehaussé par de fréquentes mises à jour et réimpressions pour intégrer les tous derniers progrès scientifiques et informations géographiques. Cette page de Theatrum orbis terrarum comprend trois cartes distinctes, chacune avec des échelles différentes, l'une montrant la côte occidentale de l'Amérique du sud et une partie de l'Amérique centrale, l'autre le sud des États-Unis (Floride), et une troisième la côte de Tamaulipas au Mexique. English: Abraham Ortelius (1527-98) was a Flemish engraver and businessman who traveled widely to pursue his commercial interests. In 1560 he became interested in scientific geography during a voyage with Gerardus Mercator. Ortelius’s major work, Theatrum orbis terrarum (Theater of the world), was published in Antwerp in 1570, at the threshold of the golden age of Dutch cartography. Theatrum presented the world in its component parts and reflected an age of exploration, broadened commercial connections, and scientific inquiry. Now considered the world’s first atlas, the original Theatrum was enhanced by frequent updates and reprintings to incorporate the latest scientific and geographical information. This page from the Theatrum orbis terrarum includes three separate maps, each with different scales, one showing the western coast of South America and a part of Central America, another the southeastern United States (Florida), and a third the coast of Tamaulipas in Mexico. The maps are titled in Latin. The texts on the reverse of the maps are in Spanish and provide descriptions of the territory and peoples of the regions depicted.

Em 1560, durante uma viagem com Gerardus Mercator, interessou-se pela geografia científica. A principal obra de Ortelius, Theatrum orbis terrarum (Teatro do mundo), foi publicada em Antuérpia em 1570, no limiar da era dourada da cartografia holandesa . Theatrum apresentava o mundo em seus elementos constitutivos e refletia uma época de exploração, ampliando relações comerciais e pesquisa científica. Hoje considerado o primeiro atlas mundial, o Theatrum Theatrum foi aprimorado com atualizações freqüentes e reimpressões a fim de incorporar as mais recentes informações científicas e geográficas.
